Pediatric Hearing

Early detection makes all the difference. We provide gentle, thorough hearing assessments designed specifically for children aged 12 and under.

Hearing is the foundation of learning

A child’s ability to hear clearly affects everything — their speech and language development, their success in school, and their social connections. Even mild or intermittent hearing loss can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to learn and communicate.

We provide diagnostic hearing assessments specifically designed for children aged 12 and under, using age-appropriate techniques in a calm, child-friendly environment.

Signs to Watch For

Is this what you’re seeing?

Your child doesn’t respond when you call their name

They turn up the volume on devices higher than expected

They sit very close to the TV or speaker

They have delayed speech or language development

They speak louder than necessary

They have trouble following directions

They frequently say “huh?” or “what?”

They have a history of ear infections

They seem inattentive or are struggling in school

What we assess

Our pediatric audiologists use specialized tools and techniques appropriate for your child’s age and developmental level. Assessments may include pure tone testing, speech recognition testing, tympanometry for middle ear function, otoacoustic emissions testing, and specialized behavioural assessments for younger children.

What the process looks like

  1. Conversation with you — We discuss your concerns and your child’s hearing and developmental history
  2. Assessment — Your child completes a series of gentle, age-appropriate hearing tests in a comfortable setting
  3. Results — We explain what we found, what it means, and what comes next
  4. Recommendations — If further support is needed, we connect you with the right resources

Why early detection matters

The earlier a hearing concern is identified, the sooner your child can receive the support they need. Children who receive timely intervention are better positioned to develop strong speech, language, and literacy skills — setting them up for success in school and beyond.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

At what age can my child have a hearing test?

We can assess hearing in children from infancy onward. The testing methods we use are adapted to your child’s age — from objective tests for infants to play-based audiometry for toddlers and standard methods for school-aged children.

My child passed their newborn hearing screening. Could they still have a hearing problem?

Yes. Hearing loss can develop after birth due to ear infections, illness, genetics, or other factors. If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing at any age, it’s worth having a diagnostic assessment.

What is the difference between a hearing test and an auditory processing assessment?

A hearing test measures whether the ear detects sound. An auditory processing assessment evaluates how the brain interprets and organizes what the ear picks up. A child can pass a hearing test and still have auditory processing difficulties.

Does my child need a referral for a hearing test?

No referral is needed. You can book directly by calling our clinic or using our contact form.

How long does a pediatric hearing test take?

Most assessments take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on your child’s age and cooperation level. We take the time we need to get accurate results in a relaxed setting.

Will my child be scared?

We work hard to make the experience comfortable and even fun. Our testing environment is designed for children, and our audiologists are experienced at putting young children at ease.
